Our Story

KY-Sail's short but sweet history begins in February 2006. Three new students were struck by the genius idea at a creative after ski. Inspired by the cold alpine weather, they discovered what was missing from the variety of events offered at KY: a trip filled with sunshine, warmth and the ocean breeze. The solution to this: KY-Sail. The club was founded later that spring by Juuso Lehto, Joonas Hjelt, Samuli Merikoski, Martti Paatela, Eero Tuulos, Teddie Wardi ja Aleksi Partanen. Joonas Hjelt worked as the president of the board for many years.

The idea right from the start was to offer unforgettable, high quality events and experiences with true sailor spirit for everyone interested in sailing, sunshine, crayfish or overall having a great time. We've set our goals high from the beginning, hiring a professional graphic designer to help with our visual design, from our logo to fonts and colors. 

The fall of 2006 featured our first sailing trip, when 40 eager students traveled to Greece. The trip was memorable for everyone, with the warm sunshine, dinner tables full of Mediterranean treats and glasses half full despite one surprisingly strong storm. This experience was a valuable start to the annual tradition.  

We have always worked on the principle of open doors to all our events and activities, since the most important thing for us is the people who we work with. After a few years of ground work the first board was brave enough to hand the ropes to the next generation of eager sailors. The later boards have successfully been able to maintain the spirit of the founding members and take the club to a whole new level of which the founders could only have dreamed of.
